Anchorage and Area
Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage » (population 260,283), is a popular visitor destination and center of commerce for the region. Luxury hotels, fine cuisine and shopping are only minutes from state parks, an extensive paved bike path system and many historical sites. The view of the Chugach Mountains, Southcentral Alaska’s primary mountain range, greets visitors to Anchorage.
Visitors can enjoy wildlife museums, the Alaska Zoo and Potter March – where up to 130 species of waterfowl can be seen throughout the year. Reminders of the 1964 earthquake can be found in Earthquake Park along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. You can visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center with its artists, performers, interpretive displays and traditional village exhibits. Or stop by the Anchroage Museum of History and Art for changing exhibits of local history, Alaskan art and Native culture.
A short trip north of Anchorage takes you to the Eagle River Nature Center where you can view the breathtaking alpine scenery of Chugach State Park. A bit further north takes you to the Eklutna Village Historical Park, where visitors tour the St. Nicholas Russian Church and view brightly painted "spirit houses."
If you head south from Ancorage, stop at Crow Creek Mine in Girdwood and pan for gold or enjoy the area’s many interesting shops and restaurants. For spectacular view of Turnagain Arm, you can hike Crow Pass trail – a portion of the trail that took gold panners to the gold fields on Interior Alaska in the early 1900s, or take a ride up Alyeska Resort’s mountain tram.
It was named an All-America City in 2002. It is a place people are proud to call home and a place people love to share.
